What to bring:
Join us on this unforgettable two day tour around the south coast of Iceland. This tour includes stops at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon where you can see seals swimming between the icebergs. We will also visit powerful waterfalls, volcanic sand beaches and the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull. You will have the chance to explore Vatnajokull on a magnificent glacier hike.
We will travel like Vikings through lunar landscapes where rivers roar through black deserts sands and experience the countless natural splendors the coastline has to offer. You will not be going on a normal tour, but an epic journey into a mesmerizing wonderland where towering cliffs and menacing mountains loom over placid lava fields that the centuries have enveloped in a soft blanket of pale green moss.
In the course of two days, we will explore the ancient waterfalls that stand guard before the highlands. We will see the black sand beaches that adorn the southern coast and you will voyage through the Skaftafell Nature Reserve towards the crown jewel of the south, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon.
The first stop of the tour is at Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Here you can walk behind the waterfall and feel the vibrations of the water hitting the ground. Right next to Seljalandsfoss, is the waterfall Gljúfrabúi, a hidden gem in a small gorge. To see the waterfall you have to balance over stones in the river.
Next we prepare to meet one of the pearl of the south coast, Skógafoss waterfall. Skógafoss is dropping 60 meters from a cliff and producing a lot of mist which makes beautiful rainbows in the sunshine. Try to warm up for the glacier by running up the 527 steps to the top and see breath taking views of the waterfall and surrounding landscapes.
Next, we will head out to Sólheimasandur desert where a US Navy DC-3 crash landed in 1973 after running out of fuel midair. The wreck has since then been immortalized in numerous music videos and viral photographs. The plane itself is 4 km from the nearest road so we provide the coolest transportation method available, fat bikes. We only travel in style. In essence, we’ll be riding a fat bike over volcanic sand and ash towards a black sand beach containing a crashed Navy airplane deemed too far away to salvage. Enjoy!
After we visit the powerful Skógafoss we will head on to Reynisfjara black sand beach, where big waves are hitting the shore. You can see basalt columns in the cliffs, rock pillars in the water and the cliffs of Dýrhólaey in the distance. But this beach is also a paradise for bird lovers because puffins are nesting on top of the rocks in the summertime from June to August.
During the peak of summer, you will experience the midnight sun, whose soft light casts a natural filter no Instagram or photo app can replicate.
In the winter time you might even see the northern lights dance in the skies.
We will start this day with a visit to the famous Glacier Lagoon. Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon is a 250 m deep glacial lake fed by Europe’s largest glacier with enormous icebergs. It’s truly a once in a lifetime experience to stand up close to the icebergs. We will take a walk along the shore and enjoy wonderful views of the icebergs. Here you can feel the absolute silence of Icelandic nature. You will have the opportunity to book a boat ride between the icebergs during summer time and get a closer look of the blue and white ice.
Just on the other side of the road the icebergs are floating into the Atlantic ocean and are thrown back to shore by weather and tides. This black sand beach is called the Diamond Beach because of the crystal ice bergs on it. The beach is full of ice rocks in uncountable shapes and sizes, sparkling like diamonds in the daylight. Sometimes even some blue icebergs are standing at this beach and give opportunities for spectacular pictures.
To complete our perfect adventure we will high five with a real glacier. You will hike on a glacier where you will witness all the natural formations that ice can have. Get amazing views of the south coast from the glacier – the perfect photo opportunity.
