The south coast if often told to be the most beautiful part of Iceland – get to know why!
The south coast of Iceland is often told to be the most beautiful part of the country. There is a good reason for that. On the south coast you will see some beautiful waterfalls, black sand beaches, volcanoes, mountains and amazing views over the lowland of the south coast.
There are so many places on the south coast that should be on your bucket list. We recommend that you take good time to explore the south coast so you wont miss anything.
Top sights on the south coast:
One of the good things about the south coast is that Road 1 (the Ring Road) will lead you to most of the popular attractions in the south coast. The Ring Road is pretty easy to drive but of course we recommend that you check the weather forecast before you head on to a self driving trip to the south coast, especially in the winter.
You can rent a car and self drive through the beautiful south coast. If you don’t feel comfortable in driving on your own or if you would like to meet some new friends as you travel in Iceland, you can also find variety of bus tours and minibus tours that takes you sightseeing in the south.
You can add some great activity to both your self driving tours and group tours which we really recommend to make the most of your trip to the wonderful south coast of Iceland.
You can find a lot of great accommodation in south Iceland. Everything from farm stays to luxury hotels to campsites.
Here below you can see a couple of villages that we recommend for staying over night and the hotels that we recommend in each village.
Hveragerði – the capital of hot springs
Hveragerdi is often called the capital of hot springs. The main reason is because you can find natural hot springs and geothermal areas all around the town. The name, Hveragerdi, is actually Geyser Garden in English.
Hveragerdi is a small cute town only 35 minutes from Reykjavik. You can take some beautiful hikes to the hot springs and enjoy the small town life of Hveragerdi. We really recommend that you take the hike to Reykjadalur valley and dip into one of the natural hot springs.
Here you can find accommodation that we recommend in Hveragerdi:
Frost & Fire Hotel
Vík village is a very popular destination on the south coast of Iceland. You can find numerous of breath taking attractions nearby and therefor it can be very difficult to get accommodation in Vík, specially since AirBnB was forbidden in Vík. We would recommend that you book your accommodation as early as possible if you want to stay in Vík. Here you can find some accommodation in Vík area that we recommend:
