Hrunalaug Hot Spring
Hrunalaug hot spring is a small geothermal pool located near Fludir in south Iceland. At the hot spring you can find two pools with natural hot water. One is made of concrete, which is the smaller one and fits about 3 people, and the other one is a rock wall. The rock wall pool is a bit bigger and fits about 7-10 people. Both pools are warm and clean.
There are no changing rooms at the hot spring but you will find ruins of an old locker-room that you can use to change.
Hrunalaug hot spring is a perfect add on to your self driving trip to the Golden Circle, as it is located only 35 minute drive from Gullfoss waterfall.
Our Visit to Hrunalaug Hot Spring
I had been wanting to go to Hrunalaug for a long time. Last winter I was driving around Flúðir and decided to go and visit this natural hot spring. We typed “Hrunalaug” into Google Maps and headed over there. It was very dark outside since it was over the winter time and when Google Maps told us that we had arrived, we couldn’t find anything that looked like a hot spring. After walking around for few minutes we decided to head back to Reykjavik.
This summer when we were traveling around the Golden Circle and Flúðir, we decided to give it another try. At first we wanted to go to the Secret Lagoon. The Secret Lagoon is a large geothermal pool that has facilities and showers. The entrance fee to the Secret Lagoon is about 25$ but you can also go on day tours to the Golden Circle and the Secret Lagoon. You can find tours to the secret lagoon here.
When we arrived to the Secret Lagoon, the pool was packed with people, so we decided to head on to Hrunalaug hot spring instead.
This time we added “Hrunalaug Hot Spring” into Google Maps. This route took us straight to the hot spring.
The hot spring is located only about 3 minutes walk from the parking lot.
My recommendations for visiting Hrunalaug
- Try going there late in the evening or early in the morning to avoid crowds. In the summer time it’s magical to go there during the night. In June and July we have daylight almost 24 hours, so it’s a great idea to go exploring during the nights. Everything is so quit and peaceful.
- Take good care of the hot spring and the land around it. Don’t leave any trash behind and there is no camping on the site.
- Type “Hrunalaug Hot Spring” into Google Maps to easily find the hot spring.
How To Get To Hrunalaug?
If you are driving around the Golden Circle, it’s likely that your last stop before Hrunalaug will be Gullfoss waterfall. After exploring Gullfoss waterfall you should keep on driving south on “Biskupstungubraut” until you turn left to “Bræðrartunguvegur”. Drive on that road until you reach Flúðir. Drive through the village of Flúðir and turn left to “Langholtsvegur”. Few meters later you will have to turn left to “Hrunavegur”. Drive around 3 kilometers on Hrunavegur until you reach “Kaldbaksvegur” to the right side. You will also see a sign that says “Hruni” there. You pass the church on your left side and very shortly after that, you make another right turn. From there it’s just around 400 meters to where you park your car on the left side.
