This Iceland Volcano tour gives you the chance to enjoy many of the most amazing things Iceland has to offer. This tour is a combination of nature, history and adventure.
This unique Iceland volcano tour literally takes you inside a dormant volcano. We will go through the top crater and to the bottom of its magma chamber where molten magma flowed during an eruption.
Reached via an hour long hike and entered by way of an open cable lift, a descent of 120 metres, the ground space inside the volcano is equivalent in size to around three basketball courts, and the cavity could easily fit the Statue of Liberty.
Following an eruption magma chambers usually collapse, but in Þríhnúkagígur the lava drained out like water from a pipe leaving the volcano’s plumbing system empty. The Þríhnúkagígur crater is therefore one few places in the world where you can enter a magma chamber.
The whole Inside a volcano tour takes around 5-6 hours. This includes pick up and drop off at your accommodation in Reykjavik.
We will stat the tour with driving from Reykjavik to Blafjoll mountain. The drive takes about 20 minutes. We will meet our guide at Blafjoll and start our hike to Thrihnukagigur volcano. We will hike through lava fields and sometimes feel like we are walking on the moon.
The hike takes about 45–50 minutes and is rated as moderate in difficulty. You will be walking on a hiking trail for most of the time but the surface can be hilly and uneven.
After we arrive to Thrihnukagigur volcano the group will be informed about all safety procedures and how to behave in the area and when you are inside a volcano. The group is then split into a smaller party of 6–7 people. The trip down or up takes about 6 minutes.
We will spend about half an hour on the ground of the volcano. Here you can take as many photos as you want. Expert guides will be with you at all times, in the cable lift and on the ground in the magma chamber.
Once we have explored inside a volcano we will head back up to the surface. While we wait for everyone in the group to complete the tour, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a traditional Icelandic meat soup, hot coffee, tea or chocolate and perhaps some sweets.
Finally, we will hike back over the lava field. The coach will be waiting for you in the parking lot, ready to drive you back to your accommodation in Reykjavik.
